The Easiest Way To Clean Out A Grimy Cup Holder

A picture of a car seat with cup holders before and after cleaning.

If a blog post that weโ€™re working on requires a photo of the inside of a car, we often take it inside my daughter Brittaโ€™s car. And thatโ€™s simply because out of the three cars that are parked at the OGT Studio when we take photos, hers is usually the cleanest! (In fact, it was actually too clean to use for the photos in today’s post.)

Britta takes after my husband Dave in that regard, whose personal standard for car cleanliness has always been extremely high. I, on the other hand, have remained firmly outside the influence of Daveโ€™s neurotic car care tendencies, though I do suspect that Britta’s habits may be making more of an impression on me!

Iโ€™ve been making more of an effort to keep my car clean lately, and experimenting with different methods. I recently discovered a great way to clean one of the grimiest parts of the car, and I’ll be sharing that with you today! :-)

The Best Way To Clean Cup Holders In Cars

If thereโ€™s one part of my carโ€™s interior that Iโ€™ve struggled to keep clean, itโ€™s the cupholders! It seems like they always end up with a sticky, crumby mess at the bottom, and that mess always seemed to put up a fight!

It used to take me ages to wipe them completely clean, until I discovered a simple method that made it fast and easy! So hereโ€™s the scoop on how itโ€™s done, so you can use it to clean your cupholders in seconds. I’m sure you’ll be amazed at the results!

How To Clean The Cup Holders In Your Car

Youโ€™ll need:

Directions:

Start by stretching a sock over the bottom of your cup. (Fuzzy socks work really well here, both because theyโ€™re great at grabbing onto gunk and because theyโ€™re easy to stretch over the base of a cup.)

Once youโ€™ve got the sock on the cup, spray the sock with your cleaning spray of choice. (If your cup holders are really grimy, you may want to spray the cleaner directly into the cup holders and let it sit for a minute or two before moving on to the next step.)

Next, place the sock-covered cup into the cup holder, put some pressure on it, and give the cup a good twist.

The sock will pick up the majority of the gunk in the cup holder, easy as that!

Detailing

If necessary, wipe off the remaining ledges and tight corners that the cup canโ€™t reach. You can do this by slipping the sock off the cup and onto your hand and wiping them clean.

  1. Hi, I became excited reading the strapline, ‘How to clean your car’s grimiest lady’s but was a little dashed when it was nothing to do with the grimiest parts of my car; they are the alloys, oily, grubby, sticky, yuck! It doesn’t help matters as I have disabilities and struggle to bend or walk.
Loved the idea of using a fluffy sock, I have micro-fibre cloths in the globe box for cleaning but a sock over a cup would work much better with the cup being a similar.
    Thanks as always Jille.

  2. This is a great idea!! Another that I found works, slime. You can put the glob of slime down in the cupholder & the crumbs stick to the slime. You can put it back in the container & reuse several times.

      • Years ago my husband used to buy these disposable absorbent car cup coasters that were also scented! They came in a variety of fragrances including “that new car smell” – his personal fav. Not only did all the fragrances smell nice, they lasted 45-60 days easy and were still giving off a good scent. It’s been years since we’ve seen them offered and really miss them. Car cup stays clean and car smells nice.

  4. Mine actually lifts out, so I just pop it in the dishwasher!

  7. I always put newspaper in the bottom. It soaks up spills and rainwater, also crumbs stick to it when wet. It nicely molds itself to the cupholder shape.

  8. I just cleaned ours yesterday. My go to is lint rolling the seats to get what the vacuum won’t pull off & even the carpets to get the pet hair that’s stuck, then Endust sprayed on a rag outside the car to wipe down the dash & all the hard surfaces. Since I started doing that I’m not constantly needing to dust at red lights since it helps repel dust.
